How great is our God, how vast His love, that He would give His only begotten Son to die on the cross to save us, sinners who are hostile to Him, from our sins so that we can live together with Him forever (John 14:2; Romans 5:8, 8:7).

It seems so strange that such an immensely powerful divine being would be mindful of billions of short-lived, self-centered creatures like us, as David wrote, “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained; what is man that You take thought of him, And the son of man that You care for him?” (Psalm 8:3-4). Yet, it is God who reaches out to us, takes an interest in our daily lives, and loves us to the greatest degree.

It was this unfathomable love that reached out to me as a sinner, first as a child when I was baptized at the age of seven, and then as a teenager struggling after the death of my father. It was this love that also drew me to evangelism. When I heard the MercyMe song, “Spoken For,” I felt a desire for others to experience the same love God has shown me. I wanted them to be “spoken for” as well.

Starting at a young age, I enjoyed watching anime, Japanese animated movies and television shows. I was into the Pokémon cards and Studio Ghibli films. When I thought about becoming a missionary, Japan immediately came to mind. God demonstrated how amazing He is by having me attend a high school that offered three years of Japanese. I really enjoyed learning the language.

At Liberty University, I double majored in Bible Studies and Psychology, hoping to be able to use mental health and missions in some way. However, the dream got lost in my career as I went for my master’s degree in mental health counseling and got a job at a community mental health agency. God worked His providence again. The church I attended wanted to help aspiring missionaries, and I was eventually led to WorldVenture.

By God’s grace, I will be joining a church planting team in Japan. This small group of missionaries and Japanese believers have the vision to expand the kingdom of God by making disciples and growing the local body of believers. They face many cultural challenges, including stigma for being followers of Christ, financial constraints in an expensive economy, and high work demands. Please pray for Japan, that their hearts will be softened towards God’s love, and that the believers there would be courageous in living for Christ. And please pray for my journey to Japan.
